Extreme SummitStack Virtual Chassis Technology
Extreme SummitStack is a Virtual Chassis technology that allows multiple physical switches to operate as a single logical entity. Managed through a single IP address, the SummitStack solution reduces network complexity and provides a scalable path for increasing port density and performance without high upfront capital costs.
Core Mechanism: The stack is powered by the modular ExtremeXOS operating system. One switch is designated as the Master, responsible for managing software tables and system-wide synchronization. The high-speed stacking cables function as a backplane, similar to a modular chassis. This architecture supports a diverse range of interfaces, from copper and PoE+ to high-speed fiber (10GbE and 40GbE), all within the same stack.
Key Benefits:
-
Simplified Operations: Manage up to 8 units as one logical device.
-
Mixed Stacking Support: Integrate different Summit series switches (e.g., X450, X460, X480) into a single stack for optimal port configuration.
-
Carrier-Grade Resiliency: Sub-second failover ensures that the active topology remains stable even if a link or node fails.
-
Investment Protection: Pay-as-you-grow model allows for adding capacity only when needed.
